Dr. Karen Berman
Corporate Board Chairperson
Dr. Karen Berman has served on the board of directors for eight years. In her early career, Karen was first a teacher, and then the Director, of the Alexandria Community Y twelve-school before and after-school program in Alexandria, Virginia.
She recently retired after 12 years as chair of Georgia College’s Department of Theatre and Dance. During those twelve years she focused on bringing diversity of thought to not only her students, but also the patrons of her department’s performances. Each year she produced a major production written by an African American playwright and regularly produced plays by women playwrights. She co-wrote original plays about Czech heroes whose lives intersected with the Holocaust that she directed and which her students performed in Prague and at an international theatre festival in Hradac Kralove, Czech Republic. Karen taught theatre at Georgetown University prior to moving to Milledgeville. At both Georgetown University and Georgia College she taught classes on theatre for social change, as well as acting and directing. She was the co-founder and faculty advisor to Georgia College’s Hillel.
Karen has directed over 150 theatre productions at locations from the Smithsonian to off-Broadway. Karen is co-founder and artistic director of Washington Women in Theatre, a twenty-year old Washington, D.C. based theatre company that performs original plays by and about women. She is a past president of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. In 2008, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., she was inducted into the Collee of Fellows of the American Theatre, a hall of fame of American theatre artists and academics. She served as Dean of the College of Fellows of the American Theatre from 2016-2018. In 2017 she received the Governor’s Award for the Arts presented by Governor Nathan Deal and First Lady Sandra Deal at the State Capital.

Mr. Lamar is a native and graduate of Maggie Califf High School in Gray Georgia. He received his Bachelor Degree from Morehouse College (1966); his Masters from Georgia College & State University (1977); And Specialist Degree from Clark-Atlanta University (1990). Mr. Lamar's career as an educator began in 1968 in the Putnam County School System in Eatonton Georgia. There Mr. Lamar taught Elementary through High School for a number of years. He left there and went on to teach in the Bibb County School System where he taught Junior High and High School. As his career as an educator continued, he served as an assistant principal on an elementary level in the Baldwin County School System. Eventually, his career brought him back home to Jones County where he served as an assistant principal at the Middle School in the Jones County School System. Just prior to his retiring as an educator, Mr. Lamar had the privilege of serving as the Graduation Coach at Gray Station Middle School in Jones County.
Mr. Lamar's retirement did not stop his passion for wanting to continue to mold the young minds of our youth. He began serving in a number of capacities throughout his local and neighboring communities. Mr. Lamar has served as a member of the Boys & Girls Club's Board of Directors for the past 14 years. He is also currently serving on the Board of Directors for Jones County Department of Family and Children Services, and serves as the co-chairman for The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity's Mentoring Program. In the past, Mr. Lamar served on the Baldwin Commission on Children and Youth as well as the Baldwin Commission on Child Abuse.
Mr. Lamar's passion for giving back to his community is a self-sacrificing spirit deserving of immeasurable merits. Mr. Lamar's desire is to see each and every young mind to develop in a manner that affords him/her the opportunity to thrive and be successful individuals.

Mr. James "Jim" Fain

"Jim" Fain was born in Macon, Georgia where he attended Windsor Academy. In the early 1980’s, he was a television news cameraman and producer. He began a media sales career in radio and television from the late 80’s to 2007. During his media career, he served on many volunteer areas including March of Dimes, Central Georgia Food Bank, and several other opportunities.
In 2007 he began an insurance career and owned two Independent Insurance Agencies in Gray and Milledgeville. After selling the Milledgeville agency in 2015, he purchased a Re/Max United Alliance franchise and is currently broker/owner and has a team of 12 agents throughout Central Georgia. As a child, Jim enjoyed attending The Boys & Girls Clubs in the Bloomfield area of Macon. He learned to swim at The Boys and Girls on Second Street in Macon and has developed a strong passion for the need to serve youth. Mr. Fain joined the board after participating in our Annual Golf Classic during 2018.

Hugh Sanders---Retired College Professor
Dr. Hugh Sanders educational background began in his profession when he received his Bachelor of science in Applied Mathematics from Georgia Institute of Technology, June 12, 1965; he received his Master of Science in Applied Mathematics from Georgia Institute of Technology, June 14, 1969; and his Doctor of Philosophy from College of Education of the Georgia State University, June 9, 1979.
His professional growth did not stop with his degrees. Dr. Sanders went on to become a member of several professional organizations: (1) Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 1976 – 2009, (2) National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 1976 – 2009, and (3) Mathematical Association of America, 1976 – 2009.
Dr. Sanders began giving of himself not only academically, but also personally when it came to the Civic Organizations that he became involved in. He serves on the Boys & Girls Club of Baldwin and Jones Counties, Inc. Board of Directors since 1985 to Present; Home Park (Atlanta, Georgia) Community Improvement Association, 2009 – Present; American Legion, Petersburg, Tennessee, 2016 – Present; Milledgeville Old Capital Kiwanis Club (1978-2009; and he served on the Baldwin High School Band Parents Association, 1992 – 1993.
Dr. Sanders services to the communities in which he serves has warranted him the honors and awards he has received. In 2019, Dr. Hugh Sanders was inducted into the Boys & Girls Club of America Hall of Fame for his life long dedication to the organization and the youth in our community.
Dr. Sanders is one of the co-founders of the Boys & Girls Club of Baldwin and Jones Counties, Inc. He has served on the board for more than 30 years and in a number of roles on the board for instance Chairperson, Treasurer, Vice Chairperson, and Etc. He has also assisted in some of the grant writing that the organization embarked on. Dr. Sanders is one of the most dedicated person known when it comes to giving of his time, talents, and his heart to better serve youth in the Baldwin and Jones County Communities. Dr. Hugh A. Sanders is rare gem when it comes to the dedication that he display in serving others.

Mrs. Laura Burns Scott is an alumni of the Boys and Girls Club of Baldwin and Jones Counties, Inc. She currently serves as the Board member and is a Lawyer. As a lawyer, Mrs. Tanner is a court-appointed advocate for parents and children in dependency cases filed within the Ocmulgee Circuit. She can and has filed child custody actions on behalf of parents, grandparents or other relatives, can assist individuals with adopting children in relative or third-party adoptions. She can assist individuals in filing for chapter 13 and chapter 7 bankruptcy relief under the federal bankruptcy code. She helps individuals probate and administer the estates of their deceased loved ones. As well as help individuals with estate planning, including the drafting of wills, healthcare directives, and powers of attorney.

Andra Jenkins - President and Chief Executive Officer of Slater’s Funeral Home
Mr. Jenkins grew up in Harrison, Ga. in Washington County, he graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in Atlanta with a degree in Funeral Service Science. Mr. Jenkins is the proud father of three children Carrington, Cater, and Carcynn. He is a deacon at New Birth Christian Ministries in Tennille, Ga., sings in the men’s choir, teaches Sunday school and works with the transportation and security ministries. During his leisure time he also enjoys fishing and singing gospel music.
Andra Jenkins has served families for more than 17 years. He is an individual who has displayed compassion and care during their time of bereavement. Mr. Jenkins started his career off in Sandersville, GA and has proven to be no stranger to hard work, he has worked his way up from an apprentice to a mortician and embalmer at M.C. Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville, Ga.
Mr. Jenkins views himself as a lifelong learner and enjoys sharing his experience with those within the community. He is very familiar to what it means to serve on a board of director and what it means to be effective in serving on the board by promoting positive change. Jenkins has participated in a variety of business and civic groups. He is a graduate of Leadership Georgia, a notable leadership training program. He currently serves as the Third Vice-President of the Georgia Funeral Service Practitioners Association, Inc. and is also a member of the National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association, Inc. and Epsilon Nu Delta Mortuary Fraternity, Inc.
Jenkins not only provides support for customers, but he deeply cares for the communities he serve. Mr. Jenkins began serving on the Board of the Boys & Girls Club in November 2017. He is a committee member of the Democratic Party of Georgia and board member of the Washington County Development Authority, Washington County Regional Medical Center Foundation, and Oconee Fall Line Technical College LIFE Board. He was formerly a board member of the Washington County Regional Medical Center Hospital Authority, Sandersville School Building Authority, and the Washington County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. While Mr. Jenkins is streamlining his services to board membership within the Sandersville community, he is dedicated to getting involved in the community in which he now serves, Milledgeville Georgia. Mr. Jenkins understands what it means to be on a board and the important role that board members play in aiding in the organizations ability to obtain sustainability with the boards support and assistance.
He has received many awards and accolades for his various roles served in his past community. One of which was The National Office of the NAACP honored him during its Centennial Celebration for being the youngest person to ever serve as a branch president.

She also takes works closely with the Gardening Club to ensure that our youth have the experience of caring for the environment and reaping the benefits of their labor. She enjoys supporting Lockerly Arboretum as they continue to provide outdoor and beautification projects for those in the community....
